How to draw straight lines in Procreate

Procreate hasn’t made this feature super obvious but I’m going to outline below how you can easily draw a straight line in Procreate.

Knowing how to draw straight lines in Procreate is an essential technique, and really useful for quickly sketching; interiors, exhibition stands and even logos. Today I’m going to show you how to do this;

01. Open a new canvas and select your brush

If you're after a perfectly straight line select a monoline brush. For a more sketchy feel select an appropriate brush.

02. Turn on Procreate ‘Drawing Guide’

Navigate to ‘Actions’ and select ‘Drawing Guide’. Using this feature really helps alignment.

03.  Draw a line with your Apple Pencil

Draw your line horizontally along one of the grid lines. It doesn’t have to be exact, simply draw the best line you can but the key element here is to not let go and keep your Apple Pencil touching the screen.  It should then (after a second) magically straighten itself out.

04.  Final step

Once the line transforms you can let go of it. Alternatively you can move your Apple Pencil and adjust the line.

Done!

What is Procreate?

Procreate is one of the best (iOS) apps for digital design and art. Coupled with an Apple Pencil, Procreate allows you to produce professional level imagery using the myriad of brushes. As a designer dabbling in many different fields and mediums, I find Procreate is the perfect tool to; map out ideas, quickly visualise logos before detailing and creating illustrations for websites and promotions. It’s especially useful if you don’t have your sketchbook to hand. Procreate remains perhaps the best illustration/ drawing app on the iPad and with the release of Procreate 5 it introduces a host of new functionality like: CMYK mode, PSD brush import, and more excitingly Animation Assist.
